A Celebration Woodland...'Trees for Families' is a woodland project that is unique to Gretna Green. It is a wonderful way to mark a special occasion, maybe your Wedding Day, an Anniversary, a special birthday, a christening or to remember a loved one.

Gretna Green is a special place, full of warm memories as wedding couples and families come here to celebrate marriage. Its legacy spans over 250 years of wedding romance; newlyweds and families returning year after year.

'Trees for Families' woodland gives you the opportunity to not only show care for the environment but also make your mark on a part of Scotland's landscape as your tree grows and thrives to become a permanent feature in the Scottish Lowlands.

Part of a Wedding celebration...

Plant your own tree as part of your wedding ceremony here in Gretna Green or as a symbol of a wedding that has already taken place. Create a permanent natural symbol of your wedding and your life together - something that you, your friends and family can always come back to see.

A tree has a symbolic link with weddings...as a couple you develop strong invisible roots, in the same way a tree relies on its roots for survival, so does a marriage. Without roots that are strong the tree won't stand.

A quote from Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernieres sums this up beautifully...

'Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.'

Trees for Families Ceremony...

Each tree in the 'Trees for Families' woodland is planted as part of a ceremony. You can choose to do this before or after your wedding; on the same day or at a different time. Your tree will be individually tagged with details of when it has been planted. As part of the ceremony you will receive a certificate of the planting as a reminder and keepsake. Each tree will have its own identity number so you can come and watch it grow.

The tree planting ceremony is completely tailored for your own special occasion: from the details you provide to us we will prepare a reading for the day; alternatively you can prepare and present your own reading. Your reading forms part of the certificate you take home with you.

The Trees for Families Woodland is made up of a mixture of native species; we will do our best to plant the species of tree you prefer. Each Celebration Tree is about 1m tall when planted.
