Discover Gretna Green, where every love story becomes part of our history…
Why is Gretna Green Famous?
Gretna Green may be a small village on the Scottish border, but it has a worldwide reputation as a wedding destination. It first became a haven for young lovers from England and Wales following the introduction of the 1754 Marriage Act down south. Back then and for some years after, you were forbidden from marrying without your parents’ permission if you were under the age of 21. So young romantics eloped over the border to Scotland, where it was much easier to marry.

What Makes Gretna Green Special Today?
Now fondly recognised as a longstanding romantic wedding location, you can still tie the knot here in our historic marriage houses – and get Gretna Green on your marriage certificate.
Gretna Green is also synonymous with anvil weddings, a tradition that began at our Famous Blacksmiths Shop. It was here that blacksmiths would make and repair tools, and shoe countless horses, for local people and farms. But from 1754, the blacksmith in Gretna Green became notorious for a different kind of forging: joining rebellious couples in marriage. And you can still marry in this ancient building, which retains the magical charm it’s held since runaway weddings first arrived here all those years ago.

Everyone Friendly Weddings
Gretna Green also boasts the manor house of Gretna Hall. Built for Gretna Estate in 1710, it became a coaching inn in 1825 and was the first official stop in Scotland for travelling stagecoaches and private carriages. It too started to be frequented by runaways desperate to marry, but forbidden to do so back home, and became particularly popular for romantic fugitives who were more well-to-do and even aristocratic. Nowadays, our lovely manor house offers three atmospheric marriage rooms and a picturesque courtyard backdrop.
Legend has it that if you touch the famous Gretna Green anvil, it will bring you good fortune in affairs of the heart. Whatever the truth is for those hoping to be lucky in love, it’s a fact that wedding bookings at Gretna Green are really straightforward.
