Five stars for our new visitor attraction. Four centuries of amazing history. Three simple steps to get married here. Two lovely hotels to stay in. One world-famous, romantic destination. From day trips to your big day, Gretna Green has everything you need.
A Place to Escape From it All
Like the horseshoes handed to happy couples by blacksmiths down the years, Gretna Green leaves you feeling that your luck’s in. With both the Famous Blacksmiths Shop and historic Gretna Hall on site, we’ve been the authentic home for runaway couples and anvil weddings for over 270 years. We’re also the only choice to make if you want ‘Gretna Green’ on your marriage certificate. Our first-class wedding hosts excel at intimate ceremonies in our various cosy and intimate venues, though we cater for larger events too. And with so much to enjoy, whether you want to lie in, dine out, do some shopping or say ‘I do’, you’ve come to the right place.

Stay in Style at Gretna Green
If you’re looking for accommodation in or around Gretna Green, we’ve a range of tempting options for you. There’s our luxury four-star boutique hotel, Smiths at Gretna Green, only a stone’s throw from the Famous Blacksmiths Shop. Or just around the corner, ease yourself into the historic Gretna Hall Hotel, built in 1710 but recently refurbished. For those looking for greater flexibility, there are also our beautifully appointed Bensmoor Suites, offering dog-friendly self-catering facilities for couples and families alike.

Your Base on the Border
Situated in green, rolling countryside, but close to a motorway, Gretna Green provides an excellent base for the exploration of Dumfries and Galloway, the stunning coastline of the Solway Firth, Cumbria and beyond. Hailed as ‘The Gateway to Scotland’, we offer the perfect place for families, couples and groups to use as a springboard for trips around the south of the country and into northern England.
Heritage that Spans Four Centuries
The striking of hammer to anvil, as a symbolic gesture to seal a marriage, has become synonymous with our home. All the wedding venues in Gretna Green use anvils as part of their wedding ceremonies, which has long since become tradition. But the home of the oldest anvil in existence is the Famous Blacksmiths Shop, where the custom began when the first runaway wedding arrived in 1754.
