Blacksmith buildings were often at the centre of village life in the days before motorised transport. But following the Marriage Act of 1754, Gretna Green saw many runaway couples arrive in Scotland, where unions remained much easier. As a result, in its old smithy metalwork gradually gave way to marriages, as the blacksmith became, at first, an accidental wedding official.
