From intimate elopements to grand gatherings, discover the perfect ceremony style for your special day
Whether you’re dreaming of a romantic runaway wedding or a traditional celebration steeped in history, Gretna Green offers a variety of ceremony types to suit every couple. Say “I do” in the famous Blacksmiths Shop, or choose from our charming outdoor spaces and luxurious venues.
Civil Ceremony
A civil wedding ceremony is a non-religious, legally binding ceremony conducted by a government-appointed registrar. It does not include any religious content but can be deeply personal, allowing couples to celebrate their love with vows, readings, and music of their choosing. At Gretna Green, arranging a civil ceremony is easy. Once you’ve selected your ceremony and paid your deposit, we’ll apply for a registrar on your behalf. Once confirmed by the Registration Office, you’ll need to submit your completed Marriage Notice Forms (M10), supporting documents (such as birth certificates), and the applicable fee to the Registration Office at Central Avenue, Gretna, DG16 5AQ, no less than 29 days and no more than 3 months before your wedding. If you book more than three months in advance, a £130 registrar attendance fee is required with your final balance. The registrar will bring your Marriage Schedule with them on the day of your ceremony.

Religious Ceremony
A religious wedding ceremony includes spiritual or faith-based elements, such as prayers, blessings, or readings from religious texts, and is typically conducted by a minister or celebrant authorised to perform weddings. At Gretna Green, couples can choose a Christian or multi-faith ceremony depending on their preferences. These ceremonies can be held in historic locations such as the Famous Blacksmiths Shop or Gretna Hall, blending centuries-old tradition with your personal beliefs. If you choose a religious ceremony, we will help coordinate with your chosen officiant and ensure all legal requirements are met.

Civil Partnerships
A civil partnership is a legally recognised relationship available to both same-sex and opposite-sex couples in Scotland. It offers many of the same legal rights and responsibilities as marriage but without the traditional structure or ceremony of a wedding. Like a civil wedding, a civil partnership ceremony is led by a government-appointed registrar and contains no religious content. At Gretna Green, we welcome all couples wishing to form a civil partnership and will support you every step of the way. Once your booking is confirmed with us, we’ll apply for a registrar on your behalf. You’ll then need to complete and return the Civil Partnership Notice Forms (CP10), along with supporting documents and the appropriate fee, to the Registration Office at Central Avenue, Gretna, DG16 5AQ, no less than 29 days and no more than 3 months before your ceremony. On the day, the registrar will bring your Civil Partnership Schedule to the venue to formalise your union.
