More About the Famous Blacksmiths Shop
Built in 1713 as a traditional ‘smithy’, it continued to be a blacksmith business for over 100 years. However, the enactment of the Marriage Act in England and Wales in the middle of the century started to change its focus. As a first stopover point over the border, it steadily became a go-to wedding destination for runaway lovers from the south, who were looking to marry without their parents’ consent.
