History and Traditions of Gretna Green

Gretna Green is one of the world's most famous wedding destinations, conjuring up stories of romances, scandals, and illicit trysts.

Gretna Green Traditions and History

Over 250 years ago, countless thousands of young lovers began making their way to Gretna Green, where they married in a hurry under Scotland's lenient marriage laws.

Many tales recall lovers arriving in Gretna Green after days on the road, with an angry father in hot pursuit, trying to intercept the couple before the marriage could take place. No place in the world can claim such a rich wedding history: one of the oldest marriage certificates is dated 11th June 1772; making Las Vegas and Niagara Falls look like modern interlopers!

Nowadays the name Gretna Green evokes images of history and romance and its compelling past has attracted worldwide interest. Couples continue to become part of that powerful history by marrying, under modern Scottish law, within the original Blacksmiths Shop, over the legendary Anvil.

More than 4,000 couples say 'I do' in the Gretna Green area every year - about 13 per cent of all weddings performed in Scotland!
