Couples who married in Gretna Green
Within the historic building of the Famous Blacksmiths Shop, where the Gretna Green Story is located there are ancient marriage registers of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries on display. If you know of a family member who married here we may have a record of their marriage certificate - ask a Blacksmith Guide and they will do a search for you.
For Gretna Green weddings that took place at the Famous Blacksmiths Shop, complete records since 1928 exist and a majority of records since 1881 are also available. All records are now stored in a computerised database and usually from the groom's name alone we can find the certificate date. We can then go to the Archives and find the original certificate. For the search and a copy of the certificate, we charge £10.00.
If we cannot find records here please do not lose heart - we can suggest other places where records are kept and offer assistance and advice on where to go.

If your name does not have an immediate association with a Scottish Clan you can adopt a clan or choose a modern tartan to wear. It is traditional for those out with a clan to be welcomed into a clan - the clan offering protection in return for skills or services. This custom is known as a "Bond of Man Rent" and is at the discretion of the Clan Chief. You could be adopted by the Clan MacDonald, which is the largest clan in Scotland and have a long tradition of Bonds of Man Rent.
